Decluttering 101

Decluttering a space can be extremely taxing on many individuals and families. People constantly postpone this task due to various reasons that we will discuss. There are many aspects to consider when wanting to declutter your space. Overall, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. We will take a deeper look at why decluttering your space comes with negative connotations as well as ways you can overcome this.

Why do people feel overwhelmed? Decluttering can either be a big job or a small job. Let’s be honest. It is often a quite big job which can be intimidating for busy individuals and families. Decluttering your space can take days or even weeks. Some individuals may not have that kind of time available. If it takes more than one day and you must leave the clutter lying around, it can be difficult to get through your subsequent days with disorganized clutter in your space. Other daunting thoughts that come to mind when trying to declutter your space are:

  • Being unaware of where to put your clutter

  • Trying to decide between what stays and what goes

  • Possibly reopening sentimental items

  • Doing it all by yourself

  • You feel like you are wasting if you get rid of a large number of items

  • You are tired

We know that decluttering your space can be a burden on your *physical and mental health*. Here are some tips that can aid in ensuring this process runs a bit smoother. These tips are geared towards helping you improve your decluttering experience with a focus on the possible stages.

Before you begin:

  1. Take some time to relax and enjoy self-care. If you engage in an activity that helps to ease your mind and nerves, you will most likely be ready to tackle everything that comes your way.

  2. Create an organized list. You may even want to try a checklist. Any type of cleaning becomes easier if you keep track of what is complete and what still needs to be done.

  3. Ask for help. Get your family members and friends involved in this task! Not only will you declutter faster but, it will also be more fun!

During the task:

  1. Start small. You do not want to feel overwhelmed as soon as you begin. It will benefit you to gradually work your way through your list.

  2. Delegate areas and tasks. It is more efficient to have groups of people working on different areas of the house and/or various tasks.

  3. Clean, disinfect and sanitize as you go.

After you finish:

  1. Now that you have decluttered your space, treat yourself to something that makes you happy!

  2. Enjoy your decluttered space.
